Benzema becomes Real Madrid’s LaLiga leading scorer

Only seven minutes into the match, Karim Benzema opened the scoring, giving Real Madrid a provisional lead against Athletic Club in their attempt to take sole possession of LaLiga’s top spot.

With this goal, the fourth of the campaign, the French striker became Los Blanco’s top scorer in the domestic competition in spite of the nagging injury that impeded him from completing a proper pre-season.

Gareth Bale sits in second place with three scoring efforts in LaLiga.

Benzema’s previous goals had come away from the Spanish capital at Espanyol, Las Palmas and Betis, so this was the first in front of the Bernabeu crowd.

The ex-Olympique Lyonnais forward remains scoreless in the Champions League, so his four goals are tied for the overall lead with Bale, Cristiano Ronaldo and Marco Asensio in all competitions.
