Sometimes a new contract is as good as a new signing and Real Madrid are certainly hoping Toni Kroos will provide such a boost, the German putting pen to paper on an extended deal until 2022.
Something of an unsung hero within Zinedine Zidane’s side, the midfield stalwart has been a consistent fixture in the starting XI since joining in 2014, and has no desire to leave for the time being.
“Players cannot do anything about rumours, so I did not want to say anything [in the summer], although I’ve been happy in Madrid since day one,” Kroos told reporters at the Estadio Santiago Bernabeu.
“I did not think of anything other than staying here.”
Tied to the Spanish capital for another six years, this contract extension should keep Kroos in a Blancos shirt until he’s 32.
“I am very happy at Madrid, it’s the world’s biggest club,” he added. “I thank the club for their confidence in me because I’ve had two great years and hope for many more.
“My decision to come here has been successful and I’m very happy to stay for six more years.”
