After committing an error to gift Borussia Dortmund an equalising goal in the 43rd minute, Real Madrid goalkeeper Keylor Navas has owned up to his mistake.
Navas could only punch Raphael Guerreiro’s free kick right onto Raphael Varane’s face, with striker Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang on hand to slot the rebound home.
Varane would go on restore Real Madrid’s lead, but Andre Schurrle’s late goal meant the match ended in a 2-2 draw.
“I recognize that I made a mistake with the first goal,” Navas said in his post-match comments. “The ball caught me by surprise and I obviously didn’t see it properly.
“We all know when we do something wrong, and we have to work to improve on these small details.”
The 2-2 draw at the Signal Iduna Park was Navas’ first appearance of the season, with Kiko Casilla deputising for the Costa Rican after he underwent a surgery on his heel over the summer.
“Kiko [Casilla] has done very well, and we all support each other.
“I’m just happy to play, as that’s what all players want.
“It’s been a long few months since I’ve played, but thankfully the team played well, put in a good effort and created many chances.”
Despite his error, Navas will be considered the favourite to start in goal in Real Madrid’s home game against Eibar this upcoming weekend.
